Ten Thousand Bytes of Cinematic Critique
I am a big fan of Reno 911!, a hilarious Cops-style sketch comedy show, so I was very excited to see this film. That this movie was mediocre can only be deemed disappointing considering the potential of the franchise and the abilities of the actors. If you took a mentally retarded child and let him snort cocaine, you would probably end up with a better plot than this movie had. There is a major law enforcement convention in Miami, everyone gets in except the Reno sheriff's department, and then a terrorist biological attack causes the convention center to be sealed. That leaves, apparently, only the eight Reno officers to patrol all of Miami (if not the entire country?).There are a number of funny jokes in this film, don't get me wrong, but there are many times when the same joke is repeated (Dangle? He's gay!), and other times when the joke is dreadful. There are also some instances of passé humor, such as a Scarface parody and a whale explosion.Any time the Cherisha Kimball character is on screen is guaranteed to be humorless. I'm not even sure why her character ever made it onto the show, but the few minutes of screen time she gets in the movie are wasted. The other characters fair only slightly better, appearing more one dimensional than usual, thanks in part to the aforementioned repetitive jokes. The characters also suffer at the hands of the plot, which really can't sustain the movie. Usually the paper-thin plots on the show are enough to provide context for gags and sketches, but the film is three times as long as an episode and it really can't support itself. There are plenty of good cameos, including a great performance by The Rock and appearances by all former cast members of MTV's The State (in addition to, obviously, Kerri Kenney, Ben Garant and Thomas Lennon, three of the stars). The film isn't a complete waste of time, but it's not worth the money to see it in theaters. Kudos to the writers for the blatant nude beach scene, though.
