Hellboy (2004)

  1. Hellboy is a technically accomplished film that I just don't find myself excited about. It has everything a film could want - a super-powered hero, monsters, Nazis, good special effects, wisecracks, explosions, gunfights, etc. Even the script is acceptable. It's just...while it is fancy and slick and injected with enough substance to make the plot worthwhile, it doesn't elevate itself into one of my favorites.

The film is based on the comic book series of the same name. It's about a demon who was brought to Earth during World War 2 by Nazis interested in the occult. The demon was dubbed Hellboy and raised by the U.S. government. He works with a secret agency to combat monsters and other creatures from the nether realm.

There are a lot of cool things in this movie. You have a bad ass Nazi guy with blades, always a treat for the kids. You have a big ol' devil as the good guy (and he smokes a cigar and loves kitties - very complex character). You have a bizarre possible romance between a human female and a demon. Really, there's everything. Action, danger, romance, comedy. Everything...

...but it just feels like there's something missing. Maybe Hellboy isn't all that endearing. He's a big lug with a heart of gold, but his personality is a bit flat. He's kind of a dick but not a total dick, and he's kind of a big lug with a heart of gold but not really. He's probably the one character with the least plot development, and he could have been fleshed out more. After all, he is the main character.

Hellboy looks good and is worth seeing at least once. It was constructed quite well, but it's lacking a little bit of soul that could have made it a classic.
